Bunk Beds And A Memory

When I was just a kid back in the seventies, I always loved when the family would take a trip to go visit my grandparents. They were about a six hour ride away from us, so whenever we did go, we always stayed over one or two nights. It was only my mom, dad, my sister and myself back then. The one thing that stands out so clearly for me was the full bunk beds that my grandparents had bought for us, and were always there in the spare bedroom.

Both me and my sister loved those beds, taking turns sleeping on top each time we visited. Weeks before we were scheduled to go, we always knew who was going to be sleeping where, and who’s turn it was last time. The waiting used to drive us crazy. Climbing up and down the ladder to the top bunk was one of the best parts. We also would take the blankets off the beds and make a fort out of the bottom bunk.

I thought these were unique bunk beds because they were so sturdy, made out of this thick wood and painted white. The white made the beds stand out in the room which was darker, and which is why I really only remember the beds and not the room itself.

As the years passed, my sister got older and she didn’t make the trip as often with the rest of the family. Even though the top bed was mine every time she didn’t go, it was very lonely without her. It just wasn’t the same without her. I would still build the fort when she wasn’t there, but I would quickly get bored and find something else to do.

As I was lying in my own metal bunk bed in college one night, I got a call from my parents that my grandfather had passed away. I was really saddened over this news because those trips we went on we so fun and so rich with memories. I’m going to miss those times together.
